About David Thompson
“Mid-way in life’s journey I found myself in a dark wood, having lost the way.”
Dante. The Inferno
I bring to my work a high level of academic achievement and intellectual capability (including a first class degree) with a personal manner that is very down-to-earth.
Feedback I’ve received suggests that most of my clients experience me as deeply empathetic, compassionate, and non-judgemental while also having a capacity for helpful and effective challenge.
Many years of study and therapy enable me to ethically and effectively carry out my work. However, my practice is influenced just as much by my own lived experience and my doubts about the efficacy of the medical model in dealing with mental health issues.
Prior to coming into this work I practised as a lawyer. Throughout my life I’ve experienced a good deal of the pain and suffering experienced by many of my clients. It was my own prolonged experience of depression that led me to have many years of personal therapy and brought me to where I am today.
Qualifications & Experience
I qualified as a counsellor in 2013 after four years of study. My course was accredited by BACP the leading governing and regulatory body.
I have subsequently completed a great deal of supplementary training. I did several years of additional psychotherapy training including a placement in a secure psychiatric unit.
I have also completed training in working with couples with the Centre for Relational Couple Therapy with David Slattery a pre-eminent couples therapist and trainer.
I’ve been practising since 2011 and have several thousand hours of experience. Prior to private practice I worked in several different environments including Bristol University, Bath University, the Carers’ Centre, and Swindon Council’s Youth Counselling service.
